The seaside resort of Wijk aan Zee is completely hidden behind the factories of Tata Steel, the former Hoogovens. On the north side, the village is closed off by the nature reserve Noordhollands Duinreservaat. The village is only accessible by car via a narrow corridor between the Tata Steel sites. The municipality of Beverwijk, in which Wijk aan Zee is located, has only 1100 meters of beach. The beaches of Velsen Noord and Heemskerk can only be reached (by car) via Wijk aan Zee. On the south side close to the Noord Pier of IJmuiden is the surf beach with a number of beach bars.

The nudist beach is located on the north side of the village in the neighboring municipality of Heemskerk.
Nude recreation is allowed between posts 50.25 and 49.50. This area is not signposted on the beach. The area is indicated on the information boards at the beach entrances. There are no facilities on the nudist beach. There are several beach pavilions at the Relweg beach entrances. On the north side is the beach pavilion the De Vrijheit.
There is no direct bathing supervision on the beach, the nearest lifeguard post is at beach entrance 40, Kruisbergstrand.

Het zwemseizoen is momenteel gesloten, vanaf 1 mei wordt de zwemwaterkwaliteit weer gecontroleerd.
