The island of Ameland has four small village centers, from west to east: Hollum, Ballum, Nes and Buren. The ferry port is quite centrally located on the island, about 1.5 km from the village of Nes. The main tourist attractions on the island are the 27 km long beach and the beautiful nature. There are also many cozy terraces and nice shops in the villages. Tourist cars are allowed on the island, but bicycles are the most important means of transport for tourists on Ameland. Ameland has approximately 90 km of cycle paths. Just behind the row of dunes of the North Sea beach, a long cycle path runs from west to east, with many exits to the various beach entrances.
Ameland can be reached with the ferry service Holwerd - Ameland.
The crossing takes approximately 45 minutes. At 5 minutes walking distance from the boat is a bike rental.
Since 2013, the APV has been amended and nudity is officially allowed between poles 18 and 20. Outside this area, nudity is prohibited by the municipality. Because the municipality does not have the power to prohibit nudist recreation, quiet beach areas also remain suitable for nude recreation.
The beach is suitable for nude recreation from post 17.2 in an easterly direction (officially only between posts 18 and 20). The area is not signposted. Most nude recreation takes place on this beach section. Nude recreation is mainly concentrated among the small beach entrance at pole 19, which is best accessible via the Meindertspad. There are no facilities on the nudist beach. 3000 meters to the west, at the beach entrance Badstrand Buren, is the beach pavilion't Strandhuys.
The long beach is particularly suitable for a naturist walk to the eastern tip of the island, the Hon (about 9 km). The walk can be shortened considerably by entering the beach at post 21.6 only.
Many excursions, with tractor plus car, across the beach are also organized to this area.
There is no bathing supervision on the nudist beach, the nearest rescue station is at the beach entrance Badstrand Buren
